Working across sculpture, installation, performance and the moving image, Ahmet’s recent works have enquired into the human subject through the materials that enter his practice. Tropes that suggest the corporeal have consisted of; erasing or distorting the human subject; the body disappearing inside a form; material acting as a secondary skin, barrier, body or limb; and the human form taking on the status of ‘activator’.
Material above anything, hold an importance in his practice. Attracted to materials that hold a non-human condition or quality, Ahmet’s tendency is to alter their original state or purpose to fabricate a new language, position or meaning from their modest attributes, questioning their materiality in relation to the interaction they encounter with the bodily and the sculptural.
As new works emerge, the body’s physical presence is becoming less visible, making way for the invisible activities and actions that the body performs — the indexical, haptic and residual gestures for example, to be preserved and manifest new ways of working, thinking and considering the body and its relationship to the materials in Ahmet’s practice to slowly establish.
